Toshiba REGZA 40XV645U 40 Inch 1080p DOA in Three (3) Years

Fine TV until warranty expires, This was a fine TV until one month after the warranty expired. Then vertical streaks would appear during and after overlays of the main image. At 15 months the picture would begin to disappear for minutes, then hours and then days. After 2 weeks of this progressing failure it was taken in for repair. Maybe it could be repaired with replacement of the main circuit board at a cost approaching $500. This will be the last Toshiba I will buy.
DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA, BOUGHT A TOSHIBA 40XV645U TV BECAUSE I THOUGHT TOSHIBA MEANT QUALITY. 18 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE I"M HAVING SERIOUS VIDEO ISSUES. THE DEALER WHO SOLD IT TO ME IS NO HELP, AND TOSHIBA SEEMS TO CARE LESS ABOUT MY PROBLEM. I"LL KNOW BETTER THAN TO SPEND MY MONEY ON A TOSHIBA PRODUCT WHEN I BUY MY NEXT TV...AND IT LOOKS LIKE I"LL HAVE TO BUY ONE SOON.
DO NOT BUY THIS TV, I bought this TV on July 4, 2009 from Best Buy and on July 17, 2010 because the picture started going out. The colors started streaking across the screen, especially when there is any text on the screen such as news tickers etc. I took it back to Best Buy and was told it wasn't their problem and that I had to deal with Toshiba. I spoke with Toshiba and they said I had to send it in since it is 40" or bigger (isn't it amazing how the most common TV sizes require extra) and that I would have to pay $179 to have it checked. If they agreed it was a problem, I would still have to pay $59 but they would be "happy" to cover the rest. So, I have to spend $179 and "might" get it fixed. I'd rather buy a new one and be done with Toshiba and Best Buy.

Prior to this issue, the TV was fine but nothing special. I have a Sharp Aquos and Hitachi DLP and both have better pictures and sound quality. Again, DO NOT BUY THIS TV.
Toshiba HDTV is the best, When I ordered this TV, I used Consumer Reports to evaluate which TV was best. This Toshiba was not ranked first.

However, since we already had an older cathode ray tube Toshiba TV and a DVD/VCR Toshiba recorder, it seemed likely that we would select the Toshiba HDTV.

We are happy that we selected the Toshiba since the quality of the HDTV matches that found on the other Toshiba equipment that we have.

We are very happy with our purchase.
Toshiba Regza 40XV645U stay away!, I bought this Toshiba Regza 40XV645U TV in August 2009 and by Dec 2010 it was dead a SECOND TIME! the first time was in April of 2009 the bottom of the screen was all horizontal lines, I called Toshiba and had it looked at by a Toshiba certificated repair shop and sure enough the panel was bad and needed replacing.

The job was done and right away and two or three days after the TV was returned I noticed not just one or two dead pixels in the NEW panel, but a cluster of I would say ten or fifteen dead pixels in one area, but I figured it was ok i couldn't even notice it from the regular viewing distance so I lived with it.

Well now the panel is gone AGAIN! This time it's a vertical line to the center right of the screen, really noticeable when the screen goes a little darker. I called Toshiba a told them the story and was told I was out of luck, there was only a 90 day warranty on the NEW panel so I now have a $1000.
Good TV, Until the display starts going., Had my Toshiba 40XV645U for 6 months before display started showing faint black horizontal lines on left hand side, fading to normal colors on right. Progressively got worse. After a little over a year, red vertical streaks began displaying at which point I looked into the warranty. It's only ONE year, on a TV? I've never heard of this. Must be they knew they were creating a junk model.
POS, I hope Toshiba reads their reviews on their products. I bought this tv 2 years ago for around $800. Started getting a rainbow effect on the screen. Toshiba only warranties their product for 1 year. Took it to a repair shop they say that the panel went out and a new on is $380 plus labor is an extra 100. I can buy a new tv for around $400. I have to admit the tv had an awesome picture when it worked but a tv should last longer than 2 years. Technology needs to take a step back and make products that last.
DOA in Three (3) Years, This unit is DOA within three (3) years of purchase. No replacement parts are available for the circuit board that died and no warranty protection. I think it is a crime that a company is allowed to sell a product that one would expect to work well for 7-10 years and not even support its repair. I'll never buy another Toshiba TV.
Nice TV but problems with closed caption., I have been very happy with this purchase overall, but ...

I really would like to use closed captions with broadcast (received by antenna) programs.

Though the menu structure for TV features is rather complex in spots, it is not too difficult

to figure out how to enable the captions. The problem was that they turned themselves off on

a regular basis. Like when the channel was changed or the menu was displayed even if nothing

was changed. Sometimes for no apparent reason. My original Mitsubishi set was still in place

next to the Toshiba and the Zinwell digital converter box that connected it (via splitter) to

the antenna unerringly provided captions when available.

I found I could usually turn them back on by performing a Kabuki dance that involved resetting

all relevant options and turning the set off and on but that got old quickly. Phone support

from Toshiba directed me to a local appliance dealer for authorized service. Their rep agreed

something was wrong and ended up getting a replacement board for the set from Toshiba. The

software shows a change from 6.1.43.0 to 6.1.45.0.

Now the captions generally stay on when set but are not detected on some channels. Again, the

converter box displays captions without error. And, while the TV never shows any option other

than English, if Spanish captions are provided on CC3 (according to the converter box), the

captions are shown as turned off and the Spanish ones displayed. Go Figure.

I hate to say so because it has a great picture and excellent connectivity, but I am considering

selling this set and trying a different manufacturer.
Don't Buy Toshiba!!, The Toshiba products have horrid durability and life. Our 40" lasted 15 months before failure (40XV645U). The unit is stationary connected to a solid surge/brownout protect strip. After the short life of the Toshiba products (VHS, DVD, picture tube TV, and multiple LCD TV's), I would never recommended a Toshiba product.

From my experience, spend a few more dollars and buy something like the Sony (No - Samsung products are as bad as Toshiba). The Sony LCD TV is on 7 years and counting.
